Jungle, lakes, volcanoes and living Maya culture. One trip, all of Guatemala.
Watch the sun rise over the jungle from the top of Tikal’s Temple IV, swim in the turquoise waters of Cráter Azul, and walk the 400-year-old market of Chichicastenango alongside Maya families who still trade there every week. Cross Lake Atitlán by boat to the Maya towns of Santiago, San Juan and San Pedro, catch dawn at the Rostro Maya, and wander the cobblestone streets of Antigua.
Then comes the grand finale: an overnight hike up Acatenango Volcano, where you’ll camp at nearly 3,700 m and watch Fuego Volcano erupt in front of you after dark.
Small group. Local guides. Real Guatemala.
👥 Group savings: 5% off when you book 4+ travelers, 10% off for 6+.
⚠️ Good to know: Please arrive in Guatemala City before 2:00 pm on Day 1, or the day before. International flights are not included. The Acatenango summit depends on weather conditions and is only attempted when it is safe to do so.
This trip is for active travelers with a good basic fitness level. Most days are easy, but the Acatenango hike is demanding: around 5 hours uphill on steep volcanic terrain, a night in a basic mountain camp with temperatures that can drop near freezing, and an optional 3:00 am summit push.
Expect some very early starts for sunrises at Tikal and the Rostro Maya, and a few long travel days by road. If you walk or hike regularly at home, you’ll be fine.
You land in Guatemala City and we fly straight into the jungle. By evening you’re on Isla de Flores, a colorful island town on Lake Petén Itzá, ready for what’s ahead.
⚠️ Note: The itinerary and times are approximate and may change due to weather, road conditions, traffic, local authority decisions or other operational factors.
We explore the cobblestone lanes of Flores, swim at Playa Chechenal, and head to El Remate for lunch by the lake. In the afternoon you can relax, swim or just watch the sun go down over the water.
An early start that is worth it. We climb Temple IV in the dark and watch the jungle wake up below us, with howler monkeys calling and temples rising through the mist. Then a guided tour through Tikal, the greatest city of the ancient Maya.
We travel to Sayaxché and take a boat down the river to Cráter Azul, a natural pool of crystal-clear turquoise water hidden in the jungle. Swim, float and enjoy one of Guatemala’s best-kept secrets.
Flight back to Guatemala City and on to the highlands. In Chichicastenango we visit the famous market and the church of Santo Tomás, where Maya and Catholic traditions meet. We end the day in Panajachel, on the shores of Lake Atitlán.
A full day on the lake by boat: Santiago Atitlán, with its living traditions; San Juan, known for its artists and natural-dye weavers; and San Pedro, where we spend the night surrounded by volcanoes.
Optional sunrise hike to the Rostro Maya, the best view of Lake Atitlán. Then we head to Antigua Guatemala for a walking tour of its colonial streets, the Santa Catalina Arch and sunset from Cerro de la Cruz.
The big adventure starts. We hike up Acatenango to base camp at nearly 3,700 m. After dark, the show begins: Fuego Volcano erupts right in front of you, with lava and fire lighting up the night.
At 3:00 am we head for the summit (3,976 m) to watch the sunrise above the clouds, with a view of several volcanoes at once. We hike back down and you have the afternoon free in Antigua.
Breakfast with a view at Hobbitenango, a hilltop village straight out of a fantasy story. You have a free afternoon in Antigua for last-minute shopping, then we transfer to Guatemala City for the final night.
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, with Guatemala in your heart.

We stay in comfortable, locally owned hotels with private bathrooms, chosen for their location and character: lakeside in Flores and El Remate, by the water on Lake Atitlán, and in the heart of colonial Antigua.
On Acatenango we spend one night at a mountain base camp with shelter, sleeping gear and the best view of Fuego Volcano.
